3 Wheel Compact Stroller Review
There are three-wheel strollers designed for everyone whether you’re looking for a jogging stroller or a stroller that you can use every day. Managing Editor Sentry and Senior Review Writer Wendy Schmitz put these models through their paces on pavement and off-road surfaces, aswell as testing children’s comfort in the seats.
Stroller Features
The top strollers come with features that allow you to travel with your child more convenient. If you’re shopping for a new 3-wheel stroller or a 4-wheel stroller, look for features that make life easier, such as a large storage basket as well as a tray for the parent with cup holders, a movable canopy and more. It’s important to determine what features are important to you and your family and what you can live without.
BOB Gear Wayfinder is our top-rated stroller for jogging. It comes with a variety of practical features that keep parents content and comfortable. The handlebar can be adjusted to three different heights to accommodate caregivers. A wrist strap prevents the stroller from slipping while you jog. The Wayfinder also has the most extensive sunshade that we tested with a clear view up top to let kids look out while they’re relaxing. Jenni’s 3-year-old daughter found the seat to be comfortably padded, so bumps in the road don’t make him feel too shaken.
This jogging stroller also has a hand brake to help you maintain control on slick surfaces. It can fold into a compact, slim package that will take up a small space in the trunk of your car. It is also possible to convert it into an entire travel system by buying an adapter. It also works with the Uppababy Mesa V2 Bassinet.
If you’re planning on taking on rough terrain, tires are a must-have for strollers of any kind. While they don’t offer the same level of comfort as air-filled or foam-filled tires, they’re great to navigate potholes and bumps with ease.
This stroller for jogging features a fold-up that takes just two steps. It locks into position when folded and is compact enough to fit into most elevators. However it’s not as easy to move around as our other 4-wheel strollers and the lock mechanism is a bit difficult to understand. It involves pressing the button in the foot area on the front of stroller and then lifting the handle. We’d like to see a more simple system that clicks into place or opens when pulled.
Stroller Weight
The weight of the entire unit is a significant consideration. A stroller that is heavier tends to be more stable than a lighter one and may offer superior performance in rough terrain. Many parents prefer a stroller that is lighter, as it is more maneuverable, and more suitable for everyday use.
The type and size of the wheels is an important feature. Some strollers come with larger wheels, such as jogging ones that makes the ride easier for your baby. Larger wheels can add weight to the stroller and make it difficult to fold, transport and store.
Certain models in our collection include air-filled tires that are designed to provide a safe and comfortable ride for your child, even on rough terrain. However, air-filled tires could easily become flat, which will require you to change them out. If you intend to take your stroller on the road frequently, we recommend that you select a model with solid wheels. These tires can be able to withstand contact with various surfaces more frequently and last longer.
Strollers that have swivel wheels on the front are ideal for safely navigating escalators as well as stairs. Falls on escalators or stairs are the most common stroller-related injuries and can be especially dangerous for infants. If you can’t avoid using an escalator or stairs while using your stroller, we suggest that you only use it when the child is secured in the seat. Also, keep them close to you while you walk up or down.
Some strollers are available as complete travel systems where the car seat and stroller are sold together as a single unit. These types of products are usually more expensive and convenient than their separate counterparts and they may not be as effective in the long run. Many parents are disappointed when they purchase bundles because they might not include all the features they would like or be incompatible with their child’s car seat or. We suggest that you purchase a stroller that can be purchased separately from the capsule or car seat in case you want to upgrade to a higher-end model in the future.
Stroller Folding
The most compact 3 wheel strollers fold quickly and easily to make storage and transport easy. Some locks automatically lock into place when you open them. This feature is particularly useful for families that frequently take public transport or drive to go on a walk.
Three-wheel strollers are designed to maneuver through tight spaces such as aisles in grocery stores and other areas that are crowded with ease. Many are equipped with suspension systems to provide a smoother ride. This is especially beneficial on sidewalks that are bumpy.
The Guava Roam is a light jogging stroller. It’s a good-looking stroller that can be used as a travel system, with the matching car seat adapters for Nuna, Maxi-Cosi, and Cybex infant carseats, as well as the bassinet Uppababy (car seats and stroller boards are sold separately). The stroller features simple two-step fold, and can be locked once it is it is opened.
The Babyzen Yoyo 2 is another attractive 3-wheeled jogging stroller with a nice design. It’s more expensive than our top choices, but it’s worth the cost for those who love to travel or live in a city. This stroller is lightweight and can be folded down to a compact 20 17×7 inch size. It has a five-point, no-rethread, cushioned harness. It can be used as a pram to carry newborns or toddlers (with an infant car seat adapter).
While the Babyzen has some nice features, such as an ample recline and additional storage, some parents have been disappointed with its performance. The seat doesn’t lie flat when it’s reclining, and there’s no cup holders or a snack tray for kids. The brakes can also be a bit difficult to activate and the handlebars are a bit high for certain moms.
The Graco Fastaction is another stroller that’s designed to be as light as possible without sacrificing the comfort or convenience. It comes with a plethora of features, including a large basket and a one-handed fold. The only drawback is that the brakes could be a bit difficult to activate and don’t stay locked when the stroller is folded.
Stroller Safety
A stroller’s safety features will assist in keeping your child secure during use. Some of the best-scoring strollers we’ve reviewed have a five-point safety harness with adjustable, cushioned straps for crotch. This allows for a custom fit. Some have a cushioned seat cushion to protect your child’s head in the event that they fall from the seat or roll off. Some strollers come with safety brakes that lock two wheels. Pushchairs & Prams is particularly important for jogging strollers since it prevents them from flipping over when they’re going up and down escalators or stairs which can be particularly risky for children.
In our tests, we rated the maneuverability of strollers in three different ways: a stroller’s ability to rotate and bounce over dips and bumps its maneuverability when loaded with a child and its ability to maneuver over rough surfaces. We also looked at how easy it is to open and close the safety harness fold and unfold the stroller, adjust its backrest the height of the handlebar and brakes, and attach and take off car seats (if applicable).
We have found that 3-wheel strollers are more easy to maneuver than 4-wheel options, but this advantage diminishes as baby gets heavier. We recommend selecting a model with hand brakes. It can help you slow down or stop without putting in as much effort as using your body by itself. Many of the top-scoring, swivel-wheel strollers don’t have this option. Only one of our top-rated fixed-wheel strollers has it.
It is important to consider how often you will have to transport your stroller down a set of stairs or an escalator and whether it’s safe to do so while the stroller is in its position. Escalators and stairs present more of a hazard due to the fact that they move mechanical parts, making it difficult to control the motion of the stroller. We suggest finding a solution to these obstacles, like an elevator, if you have one or have a person else carry the stroller up or down with you. Some of the top-scoring strollers can be carried up an escalator or a set of stairs. an escalator, with their safety brake engaged and locked but it’s always safer to be safe than sorry.
