How to Repair Double Glazed Windows
There are a few telltale signs that your double glazed windows require repair. Obviously, water ingress or draughts leaking through the frames are a clear indication of damage to your windows and will need to be repaired in the shortest time possible.
The misting could also mean that your window seals are in need of replacement. Replacing the seals will fix the problem and prevent condensation, draughts or leaks.
Broken Panes
Broken glass is among the most frequent problems that double-glazed windows face. Double-pane windows are harder to break than single panes, but accidents can occur. You should repair damaged glass as quickly as possible.
Take out any glass fragments that could be in the frame. Make double glazing windows repairs to wear eye protection and gloves when doing this, as glass can be sharp. Once the shards have been removed, inspect the floor of your home for extra pieces of glass that may be left. It is also a good idea to search for any hooks made of metal that could be keeping the panes in place and remove them as well.
After the glass has been removed and the glass is removed, you can begin the process of removing the old glazing compound and glazing points (small fasteners that fix the glass to the window frame) and replacing them with new ones. It’s a lengthy process that requires a few tools. You’ll need latex glazing putty, pliers, glazing points, pliers, a heatgun and a putty blade.
It’s best to start at the top and work your way down when removing the old points and glazing compound. This will ensure that you don’t end up getting any of the sash’s paint or wood stuck to the tool. If you do end up removing some of the sash’s wood be sure to employ a chisel or a utility knife instead of a chemical stripper, as this can cause damage.
When you’re done you can sand the wood. When the wood is smooth you can seal it with linseed or clear wood sealer. This will shield it from future water damage.
There are a few easy fixes that you can try for a window that is cracked by a double-pane However, these solutions are not a solution to the crack and should be used only as a temporary measure. Using a silicone caulk can help seal the gap, but you need to make sure that you use a high-quality caulk and adhere to the correct application techniques.
Condensation
If you notice any moisture or mist between the panes of glass that you have double glazing, this means that your window seal has failed. This can be a problem because it blocks the gas or air that is used to insulate from getting trapped between the two glass panes, so it won’t do its job effectively and can cause temperature fluctuations that cause condensation to form.
Fortunately, this issue can be easily repaired by an expert in double glazing. To correct the issue the window repair professional will take out the window sash that is affected and IGU (insulating glass unit) before blowing in a new gasket. This will create a sturdy and airtight seal to stop condensation from happening again. They will also use drying agents to aid in drying the area out and prevent the condensation from occurring again.
You might also notice a the glass panes are a little cloudy in double-glazed windows, if the frame has changed over time. This will break the seal. This can be a serious issue as your windows will not work correctly and lose their energy efficiency.
It is possible to change a double-glazed window’s glass, however, this can be costly and is usually only necessary if the window is beyond repair. If you’re experiencing problems with your double-glazed window and are still within the warranty period, you might be able get it repaired for free or at a reduced price.
It’s worth checking the terms of your warranty prior to you contact the company to determine whether they can solve the issue without having to replace the entire window. Double-glazed windows usually have an assurance of 10 to 20 years. You might find that the company can fix the window unit instead of replacing it. If this is the case, they’ll likely send a specialist out to repair your double-glazed windows and will usually be capable of doing it quickly. This is a less expensive alternative to purchasing and installing new double-glazed windows. It’s also better for the environment!
Broken Locks & Handles
It can be a big problem if your window handle is damaged, or it is difficult to open. You will not be able use your windows. This can also give burglars the chance to break into your home. There are a variety of solutions to address the issue but the best option is to speak with a uPVC expert. Based on the severity of the issue, they can usually fix it for you or at a minimum, give you a replacement handle.
There are many different kinds of window locks, but the most common is the Maco or Mila lock, which can be found on the majority uPVC frames. These locks use bayonet style rods to lock and these can easily seize up. The handle’s nose is stuck in the popped-out state, and it is unable to return to its wedged locked position. This could be a difficult issue, but it is able to be fixed by following a few steps.
To fix the issue, you’ll need to take off the handle. This should be simple enough using a screwdriver. After removing the handle you’ll be able to view the screws that secure the lock to frame. After the screws have been removed and the handle is removed, you can make use of pliers or a wrench to try to grasp the bolts that hold the shoot. If this fails then you can put the tool between the frame and the window (the gap may be different at the ends of the windows) and create an “u” shape using your fingers to grasp the bolts.
If you can manage to remove the shoot bolts, then you can close your window by adjusting the handle to a closed position. The gearbox (espag, espagnolette, etc.) is most likely damaged and will not open by the handle. You can replace the gearbox (espag or espagnolette) without the shoot bolts, so that the window can be opened using the handle.
Broken Hinges
If your uPVC window hinges are no longer operating smoothly, you may need to have them repaired or replaced. It could be that the window was opened too vigorously or the hinge snapped. It could also be that they have a problem. Fortunately it is simple and quick, so there’s no need to buy windows that are new – you can simply get your old windows repaired instead.
First, you’ll need to remove the existing hinges. This is done by removing the screws that attach the hinges to the frame. After you’ve removed your hinges and replaced them with plywood boards cut to the proper size. Make sure that the plywood you choose to use is more robust than the original board to ensure it can support the weight of the window both open and closed. You’ll also need to use wood filler to ensure that the hole that was left by the hinge is filled completely and will not leak or break in the future.
After you’ve filled in the holes and put on the hinges, then you’ll need to paint the doors. Use a quality paint to make sure it lasts as long as it can. After the paint has dried and you are ready to re-attach the window and tighten any loose screws.
Window hinges also require regular maintenance. Regularly cleaning the friction stay track and lubricating hinge mechanisms will ensure they last longer. You can also use wood preservatives to shield them from the elements, helping to stop corrosion and keep them looking great for as long as is possible.
