3 Wheeled Buggies
A 3-wheeler is ideal for off-road walking & taking on terrains that is bumpy, like woodland tracks. They are also easier to navigate between kerbs and up and down them compared to 4-wheel models.
MadeForMums reviews editor Kath tried one of these 3-wheelers with her newborn and 3 year old, putting it through its paces on the road and on a rocky surface. Read her review here.
Stability
Four-wheel buggies, with their centre of gravity balanced by the weight of your child in the seat, are generally more stable than three-wheelers. Three-wheel buggies are nevertheless worth considering since they can handle everything from rough terrain to busy streets.
Look for a buggy with large rear wheels, as well as one that locks on the front. This makes it more comfortable to drive and less likely to break off when driving on rough roads. These all-terrain buggies also have pneumatic tires that are perfect for handling non-paved surfaces. They can be used even on sandy beaches or tracks through woodlands.
They are also excellent buggies to run with as they provide excellent stability on more rough terrain and help you stay with your running companion. They can also be used to go up and down steep kerbs and many of them come with a spring suspension that is built-in, so your baby can enjoy a comfortable ride.
A 3-wheeled stroller isn’t easy to maneuver because of its large frame. It is more difficult to get through doorways and narrow spaces than a 4-wheeler. However pushchair 3 wheels have solved this issue by implementing a clever design that makes the wheels turn upwards when not in use, which decreases their overall size, and allows you to get through doorways without difficulty.
You’ll also have to think about whether the buggy you choose to use is suitable for your child from birth or if you’re planning on using it in conjunction with an infant car seat or carry cot. If so, make sure it has the ability to lie flat and if the design is compatible with other seats and buggy boards (if you want to add a toddler onboard). 3 wheeled pushchairs of 3-wheelers fold flat and can be stood upright when collapsed – handy if you have an insufficient car boot or limited storage space at home. However, some will require you to remove the front wheel before folding if you want it to fit into even smaller spaces.
Manoeuvrability
Three-wheeled buggies are more maneuverable than four-wheeled strollers. A majority of them have a swivelling wheels on the front which allows you to steer and change direction with just one hand. Certain models come with a lockable wheel that can give you stability on more rough terrain. Some models can even be used with an additional seat or buggy board in case you’re planning to grow your family.
If you intend to take your three-wheeled buggies off the roads that are asphalted, you should choose one that has pneumatic tyres. They are able to handle the most difficult terrain. They may have to be filled from time to time, but they will be more durable and puncture-proof than solid tyres. Find a model with a a lockable swivelling front wheel to assist you in maneuvering difficult surfaces.
The fact that there is only one front wheel may also indicate that three-wheelers can be bulkier than four-wheeled buggies when folded. Check that your chosen model can fit in the boot of your vehicle and can be stood up, should it be required. Some models fold by one hand, and stand up when collapsed. This can save space in small car boot.
A well-constructed three-wheeled pushchair can handle most terrains, from busy streets to forest tracks. It’s important to think about the purpose you’ll use it for day-to-day. If you’ll be doing the school run with it, it should be able to handle steep slopes and kerbs. If you’ll be running on it, check that it has an adjustable swivelling’stretch’ lockable front wheel to ensure that the ride is steady.
MFM reviewer Kath discovered her three-wheeled buggy to be able to perform well on the countryside and urban walks. She said it was able to negotiate rocky paths, cobbles and uneven pavements effortlessly and was comfortable while running. It is also a good option for day trips since it has a lot of storage space. It has a large, spacious, zip-top covered basket and an expandable, 50+ UV hood. It can be adjusted to meet the needs of babies from birth, including the option of a carry cot or a lie-flat seat. It’s also compatible with the most popular stroller seats and second seats.
Fabric Sling Seat
The main difference between a seat made of fabric and a modular seat is the fabric sling. It is placed inside the frame of the buggy, as opposed to being placed on top of it like a modular chair. This allows for a more ergonomically appropriate position for the baby, resulting in a lower center of gravity, which is just the right height. This results in an easier push, a lighter curb pop (you don’t need the same amount of effort and weight to pop the buggy over the nose of a curb) and better balance and stability.
The sling fabrics used in these types of buggy seats are very hard-wearing and easy to clean. Developed specifically with applications for sling chairs in mind, these fabrics are incredibly UV-resistant and breathable. They also have excellent aging resistance and are very easy to clean using mild soap and water.
If you’re a jogger or are a fan of off-roading, a all terrain 3 wheeler is likely to be more suitable than a 4-wheel buggy. These types tend to have a wider base, more stable, and utilise tyres with air for agile smooth movement on rough ground.
A brand most well-known for its car seats, Maxi-Cosi has recently added an all-new 3-wheeler to its line-up with the Stella. This all-terrain vehicle has an impressive huge and spacious travel system seat unit that can be a world-facing or parent facing and reclines flat with an upgraded 5-point safety harness. It can be used from birth using a carrycot or car seat and comes with a generously large shopping basket and hood with zip pockets and a quick one-hand fold.
Created for the most discerning buggy owners this 3 wheeler that is luxurious is as stunning to look at as it is to use. The sleek frame features stunning pewter finish and accents of burnished aluminium. It’s a true eye-catching piece. This is a great option for parents who are active. It features a spacious, padded seat which can be positioned either with the child or in a world-facing position. It also comes with an upgraded 5-point harness and an entire set of rain covers.
Modular Seat
Modular seating can be set up in many ways to accommodate different seating requirements. Modular seating can be easily adjusted to create a cozy space to watch movies or a spacious arrangement for entertaining guests. Many modular seating systems also come with cushion covers that can be removed, making it easier to clean up spills and staining.
Modular Seating is available in different designs to complement your current decor or as an accent piece. You can select from a range of fabrics, colors, and shapes to create a modular seating that suits your personal style. Modular seating also has a variety of functional features, including storage compartments hidden from view for easy storage.
3-wheel buggies are especially suitable for off-road and all terrain adventures as they have more stability than 4-wheel strollers. The large, highly manoeuvrable front wheel enables agile and smooth movement, whereas the tyres are typically filled with air and have suspension, allowing for a smooth ride on even the most difficult roads and trails. The wheels aren’t as close to the ground on these pushchairs as they would be with four wheeled pushchairs. This makes them ideal for walking uphill.
Parents who like to run and jog with their children usually opt for strollers with three wheels because they are more agile and sleeker than their four-wheel counterparts. The GB Upp XL for example features a sleek, burnished silver aluminum frame, which has an easy one-hand fold as well as rear and forward facing seats, while the Babyzen Yoyo has an all black frame, a carrycot that has a full lie flat position with air-filled tyres as well as three recline positions.
Another great all-terrain choice is the incredibly lightweight, highly manoeuvrable and stunningly stylish Mountain Buggy Sport verso. This is a buggy that truly future proofs your wallet and will take you from the moment you are born with the carrycot, right through to toddler-hood with the modular seat (and beyond!). All of this is done within the footprint of one buggy.
The latest model, duet(tm), is a side-by-side buggy that’s compact enough for urban living yet with a lot of innovation and control. It features an exclusive seat made of fabric that is placed comfortably within the frame at the perfect height to distribute the weight. This makes it easy for kerb jumping and navigating neighborhoods and cities.
