If your car key won’t turn on, you need to replace it. This guide will walk you through the steps to do it on a Saab 9-3. You’ll require a replacement key with a reprogrammable battery as well as a new key-fob cover.
As opposed to earlier models, modern Saab vehicles use an electronic transponder inside the key-fob, instead of a physical key made of metal to unlock and start the car. The reprogrammable batteries in the key-fob inevitably wear out, and they can’t hold any charge. This is particularly when you use the same key for the lock you have.
A professional locksmith can replace the battery quite easily. You can also do it yourself if have the proper tools and a bit of patience. The first step is taking the key-fob from its case. Insert an open-ended head into the slot that is in the middle of your case. The plastic is thin, and it is susceptible to being damaged.
After the case is opened, you can create the new key by combining the lower portion of the old key along with transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM correctly, which can be the difference in replacing the only key for your Saab 9-3.

Once the dash has been removed, you can insert a screwdriver in the opening behind the ignition switch.
The ignition cylinder is equipped with an ignition lock that can prevent the car from starting if the key isn’t in it. If your 900’s ignition switch isn’t working, check the key to determine if it’s in the lock or in the barrel of ignition. It’s also an excellent idea to rotate your keys on a regular basis and clean them regularly to ensure that they don’t get bent.
Saab cars differ from other cars in that they do not have traditional metal keys. Instead, the car is able to recognize the electronic signals generated by the key fob through a special chip embedded in it.
